Royal Independence Gardens

park garden

A sprawling row of century-old banyan trees dominates the skyline at Royal Independence Gardens. These massive, tangled specimens serve as the permanent home for thousands of fruit bats, whose heavy, leather-winged silhouettes fill the twilight air here every evening. King Sihanouk designated this space for public leisure in the nineteen nineties to create a green sanctuary near his private residence. The gardens remain a quiet counterpoint to the busy city, defined by these ancient, shadowed giants and the creatures living within them.
