The Steung Siem Reap Hotel features a distinctive colonial facade with deep, rounded arches and soft, buttery yellow plaster that stands out from the surrounding modern structures. It was built in the nineteen twenties when French architects sought to blend European style with local tropical conditions. During the nineteen seventies, the Khmer Rouge converted the building into a government office, stripping away its character and erasing its history. Today, it operates as a hotel, having returned to its original intent and design.
