Place Marek Edelman

A narrow, tree-lined garden path stretches between the buildings of the eleventh arrondissement, marked by a plaque bearing the name of Marek Edelman. Edelman served as a commander in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and later became a cardiologist in Poland. In nineteen eighty-six, he famously refused to participate in official commemorations of the uprising, choosing instead to write an open letter to the Jews of the world. This quiet walkway honors a man who rejected monuments in favor of personal acts of resistance.
