The statue of Anne of Brittany stands on a high stone pedestal, depicting the duchess in royal robes with a somber expression. Sculpted by Jean Gautherin in eighteen ninety-six, it occupies a small square in the Luxembourg Garden. Anne twice served as Queen of France through her marriages to Charles the Eighth and Louis the Twelfth. She fought hard to maintain the independence of her native Brittany, carrying out her own foreign policy and even minting her own currency during her reign.
