You are standing on a long, slender strip of land in the middle of the Seine that was never meant to be a destination. This is the Île aux Cygnes, an artificial island constructed in eighteen twenty-seven as a functional dike. Its primary purpose was to protect the bridge known as the Pont de Grenelle and to provide a sturdy base for the railway infrastructure connecting the banks of the river. Measuring nearly nine hundred meters in length but only eleven meters wide, it remains one of the narrowest public spaces in the city.
