Pont de Bir-Hakeim

The Pont de Bir-Hakeim features two levels: a lower deck for cars and pedestrians, and an upper steel viaduct carrying metro line six. Its iron arches span the Seine in a gentle curve toward the Île aux Cygnes. In nineteen forty-two, the bridge gained its name to honor the French soldiers who held off German forces for fifteen days in the Libyan desert. A bronze equestrian statue stands on the bridge, depicting a woman holding a torch, commemorating the Battle of Bir Hakeim.
