The Porte d'Aubervilliers marks a historic boundary between the capital and its northern industrial neighbor. This location owes its name to the wall built by Adolphe Thiers in the mid-nineteenth century, a massive fortification system meant to defend Paris and control its population. Specifically, this gate stood near what was known as bastion thirty-two, which served as a fiscal checkpoint where the city collected taxes on goods entering the capital.
