Félix Potin revolutionized how Parisians bought food by inventing the modern supermarket model. Before he arrived, grocery stores often relied on opaque pricing and hidden arrangements with household staff. Potin broke this cycle in eighteen forty-four by displaying fixed prices and selling mass-produced goods under his own branded label. He cut out expensive middlemen by building his own production facilities near the Bassin de la Villette. This factory hub allowed him to process his own cacao, package goods, and experiment with advanced canning techniques that kept food fresh for his growing customer base. By the early twentieth century, the company operated seventy branches and ten factories, all supported by a massive logistics network of over six hundred horses for home deliveries.
