Jean de Lattre de Tassigny served as a pivotal military commander who led the French First Army during the liberation of France in the Second World War. He holds the distinction of being the only French general to command United States divisions during that conflict. In May 1945, he represented France at the signing of the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in Berlin.
