Cimitero di Valmy

The Cimitero di Valmy stands in the twelfth arrondissement of Paris, but it occupies a unique administrative position. Although it sits on Parisian soil, the cemetery is owned and managed by the neighboring municipality of Charenton-le-Pont, which uses it as its own local burial ground. This site was opened in nineteen-oh-six on land that was once part of the non-constructible zone surrounding the old fortifications of Paris. Its name, Valmy, refers to the local neighborhood, which in turn shares its name with the famous seventeen-ninety-two Battle of Valmy, a pivotal military encounter that secured the French Revolution. Within its boundaries, you will find a memorial dedicated to the soldiers of the operation Dynamo, the evacuation of allied forces from Dunkirk in nineteen-forty. Another memorial honors the memory of the French gendarmes who lost their lives during the Ouvéa hostage crisis in nineteen-eighty-eight.
