Gare de Bercy ceinture

The building you see at three hundred twenty bis rue de Charenton serves as a quiet reminder of a time when Paris was connected by a circular railway. This was once the Gare de Bercy Ceinture, a vital transfer point where passengers could switch from the major radial lines heading out to the French provinces onto the Petite Ceinture, the famous little belt railroad that circled the city inside the old fortification walls. The station first opened in eighteen seventy-five to facilitate these connections between the main rail networks and the circular line. It went through several reconstructions over the decades as the city's transport needs shifted, moving to different positions near the boulevard Poniatowski and the rue de Charenton to improve access. The station ceased its role as a passenger hub in nineteen forty-two, long after the Petite Ceinture had lost its popularity to the growing metro system. While the tracks outside have sat silent or overgrown for many years, the old station building found a new life as a home for a local sports club, where people practice martial arts today in the space that once buzzed with commuters.
