Schola Cantorum de Paris

The Schola Cantorum de Paris began in 1894 as a deliberate act of musical rebellion. Its founders, Charles Bordes, Alexandre Guilmant, and Vincent d’Indy, felt the established Paris Conservatoire focused too heavily on opera and modern trends. They envisioned a place that returned to the roots of Western music, prioritizing rigorous technical training in Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, and instrumental composition. By creating this alternative, they shifted the trajectory of French musical education, producing students who became titans of the craft, including Erik Satie and Olivier Messiaen.
