Allée Nicole Girard-Mangin

park garden

This path is named for Nicole Girard-Mangin, a pioneer who became the first female physician to serve in the French Army during the First World War. Her military career began in 1914 after a clerical error at the war office, where officials likely mistook her name for that of a male doctor and sent her an urgent mobilization order. Rather than correcting the mistake, she embraced the assignment and arrived at her first post to the shock of commanders who had never before seen a woman in a medical officer's role.
