Grand Guignol

The Grand Guignol occupies a former chapel at the end of a narrow dead-end street. When it opened in eighteen ninety-seven, the founder, Oscar Metenier, decided to leave the original religious architecture completely untouched. Wooden angels continued to hover over the orchestra, while the iron-grated confessionals were repurposed into private viewing boxes. This environment created a claustrophobic, eerie atmosphere that intensified the graphic violence occurring on stage. Audience members often sat so close to the performers that they could not help but feel physically connected to the horrors unfolding before them.
