Sassoon Dock Jetty

The Sassoon Dock is recognizable by the intense, brine-soaked smell of fish and the rows of trawlers tethered tightly against the concrete quay. Built in eighteen seventy-five on reclaimed land, it was the first commercial wet dock in Mumbai. Albert Abdullah David Sassoon financed the construction to expedite the cotton trade, which was booming at the time. Today, hundreds of Koli fishing boats return here before dawn, unloading tons of pomfret and shrimp into the hands of waiting merchants and laborers.
