The Taj Mahal Palace hotel features a distinctive central dome of red tiled Florentine design, rising above the Arabian Sea at the edge of the harbor. Jamsetji Tata commissioned the building in the late nineteenth century after he faced a refusal of entry at a nearby whites-only hotel. He built this structure to provide a grand space for visitors to Mumbai, eventually importing steel from Paris and bringing in electricity long before the rest of the city had it.
