The Ballard Bunder Gatehouse sits at the edge of the old port, distinguished by its dark basalt stone walls and a heavy, fortress-like tower that rises above the surrounding docks. Designed by George Wittet in nineteen twenty, this structure served as the ceremonial entrance for passengers arriving from overseas by steamship. When the Prince of Wales visited India in nineteen twenty-one, he walked through these arched gates to reach the city. The building now houses the Mumbai Port Trust archives, keeping records of the harbor.
