Old Custom House

The Old Custom House in Mumbai dominates the intersection with its massive, thick basalt walls and wide, arched entrance. Originally built in the early eighteenth century as the residence for the Governor of Bombay, the building served as the main gateway for trade goods entering the city. During his tenure, Governor William Hornby moved his residence elsewhere and converted these quarters into the central customs office. The structure remains a heavy, fortified reminder of the city's transition from a defensive outpost to a commercial hub.
