The gray basalt facade of Elphinstone College features pointed Gothic arches and intricate stone carvings that set it apart from the surrounding government buildings. Established in eighteen thirty-four to promote Western arts and sciences among local students, it became the intellectual nursery for India’s independence movement. Bal Gangadhar Tilak and B.R. Ambedkar both walked these halls during their formative years. The building itself reflects the Victorian ambition to graft European academic rigor onto the bustling heart of colonial Bombay.
