Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus features an explosion of stone gargoyles, pointed arches, and stained glass that looks more like a Victorian cathedral than a railway station. Frederick Stevens designed this headquarters for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway to blend Italian Gothic style with traditional Indian palace architecture. When it opened in eighteen eighty-eight, the building honored Queen Victoria, but the stone carving of her face was later removed. A massive central dome sits atop the structure, topped by a female figure holding a torch.
