A high gabled roof of red Mangalore tiles defines the skyline of Crawford Market. Arthur Crawford, the first municipal commissioner of Bombay, commissioned this building in eighteen sixty-nine to consolidate the city’s chaotic produce trade. He hired Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard Kipling’s father, to design the intricate stone friezes that decorate the main entrance. Inside the archway, a fountain stands carved from gray stone, featuring local farmers and animals, which remains the centerpiece of the daily trade in fruits and vegetables.
