Shri Mumba Devi

The Shri Mumba Devi temple features a peaked, multi-tiered shikhara covered in gold plating that shines above the dense local marketplace. This shrine houses the goddess Mumbadevi, the patron deity of the Koli fishing community who first settled these islands. In seventeen thirty-seven, the original temple at Bori Bunder was demolished, and the current structure rose here at Bhuleshwar to shelter the black stone idol. The goddess grants protection to the city, and her name remains etched into the foundation of Mumbai itself.
