St. Thomas’ Cathedral ( C.N.I ), Mumbai

St. Thomas’ Cathedral features thick, whitewashed walls and a heavy, square tower that marks the oldest British building in Mumbai. Construction began in sixteen seventy-six but stalled for decades as officials argued over funding and design. The building finally opened in seventeen eighteen, serving the small community of East India Company employees. During the city’s early years, the neighborhood outside these walls was a dangerous, gated fort, and the church interior offered the only sanctuary from the sweltering heat of the coast.
