The Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers rise above Kala Ghoda in a jagged, twenty-eight story block of concrete and glass. This is the home of the Bombay Stock Exchange, the oldest in Asia. In the eighteen seventies, traders conducted business under banyan trees until they formalized their meetings in a mud hut. Premchand Roychand, a cotton king who gained a fortune during the American Civil War, provided the initial funding to build the original exchange building on this site, long before this skyscraper arrived.
