Fukuzumiro

Fukuzumiro sits along the Hayakawa River in Tonosawa, marked by the sweeping, curved rooflines of its traditional wooden architecture. Built in eighteen ninety, this ryokan was the preferred retreat for Japanese writers and painters who traveled from Tokyo seeking seclusion. During the nineteen thirties, the novelist Shimazaki Toson stayed in the riverside rooms here to finish his major works. He often left his manuscript pages scattered across the tatami mats, waiting for the sound of the water to steady his pace.
