Bansuirō Fukuzumi anchors the bank of the Hayakawa River with a heavy, tiled roof and three stories of dark, weathered wood. This ryokan grew from a small hot spring inn founded in sixteen twenty-five into a sprawling estate of interconnected buildings. Its guest register holds the names of poets, painters, and prime ministers who traveled here to write or retreat from Tokyo politics. The structure retains its original architectural craftsmanship, featuring intricate woodwork and sprawling tatami rooms that overlook the rushing river below.
