The ten-story Akihabara Radio Kaikan wears a massive, vertical sign bearing its name in distinct, red block letters against a white background. It stands on the site of a nineteen fifties warehouse that first sold vacuum tubes and electronic parts to hobbyists rebuilding postwar Tokyo. When the original building faced demolition, shopkeepers packed their wares into every available corner, keeping the spirit of the neighborhood alive until the new structure opened in twenty fourteen. Its elevator banks remain perpetually crowded with figurine collectors.
