Asakusa Nishi-sandō Shopping Street

The Asakusa Nishi-sando Shopping Street is distinguished by its wooden, temple-style roof and the red floor tiles that mimic the approach to the nearby Senso-ji. This arcade replaced the traditional wooden structures that stood here for decades, which burned down in the nineteen forty-five firebombings. Merchants rebuilt the street using modern concrete, but they kept the aesthetic of the Edo period. It provides a sheltered path for people heading to the temple, housing shops that specialize in traditional Japanese crafts.
