Kaminarimon Gate

The Kaminarimon Gate features a massive red lantern suspended beneath its dark, tiled roof, with the kanji for thunder gate written in bold black ink. This entrance serves as the formal threshold to Senso-ji, the oldest temple in Tokyo. A wealthy businessman named Konosuke Matsushita donated the current lantern in nineteen sixty after a bout of illness, fulfilling a vow to the temple gods. The original structure dates back over a thousand years, though fires have repeatedly forced its total reconstruction.
