Denboin Street

Denboin Street features a weathered stone wall topped by dark, traditional roof tiles that guard the private grounds of the Denboin temple. This narrow lane once served as a primary approach for high-ranking monks and temple officials entering the complex. During the Edo period, officials restricted public access to this specific path to maintain the sanctity of the abbot’s residence. The wall hides a massive, meticulous garden designed by Enshu Kobori, a tea master who shaped the landscape over four hundred years ago.
