The Hozomon Gate features a massive, vermillion-lacquered frame that supports a heavy, double-roofed structure. Two gigantic straw sandals, each weighing over five hundred pounds, hang on the gate’s rear pillars. These sandals are offerings from the villagers of Murayama, crafted as a symbolic gesture to ward off evil spirits by showing that the temple guardians possess immense strength. The gate serves as the final entrance to the inner precinct of Senso-ji, replacing a wooden predecessor that burned during the air raids of nineteen forty-five.
