Asakusa Shrine

The Asakusa Shrine stands out for its weathered, dark wood exterior, which contrasts sharply with the bright vermilion of the neighboring Senso-ji temple. Built in sixteen forty-nine by order of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the shrine honors the three fishermen who discovered a golden statue of Kannon in the Sumida River. Unlike the nearby temple, this structure survived the massive air raids of nineteen forty-five. It remains a rare example of Edo period architecture that escaped the firestorms of the Second World War.
