The five-story pagoda at Sensō-ji looms over the temple grounds with a deep crimson lacquer that stands out against the Tokyo sky. Legend says two brothers pulled a golden statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, from the Sumida River in the year six hundred forty-five. They built this temple to house her. During the firebombings of nineteen forty-five, the original structures burned, leaving only the image of the goddess behind. The current buildings are precise concrete reconstructions finished in nineteen fifty-eight.
