Plaza de la Conchita

Plaza de la Conchita centers on a small, sixteenth-century chapel built from volcanic stone blocks taken directly from a destroyed temple of the indigenous Tepanec people. This quiet square marks the spot where Hernán Cortés reportedly attended the first Christian mass celebrated in Coyoacán after the fall of Tenochtitlán. A weathered stone cross stands near the entrance, and local legend insists that La Malinche, the translator and companion to Cortés, often worshipped inside this very church during the early years of the colonial era.
