Chapel of Santa Catarina

The Chapel of Santa Catarina sits on the edge of the plaza, recognizable by its unassuming, weathered stone facade and the single bell tower that rises above the surrounding neighborhood roofs. Built in the seventeenth century, this chapel served the workers of the nearby haciendas long before the modern city grew around it. In eighteen ninety-six, a massive flood swept through the valley, leaving the chapel filled with mud, yet the local families cleared the pews and resumed services the following Sunday.
