Jardín Hidalgo

Two bronze coyotes stand at the center of the fountain in Jardín Hidalgo, marking the heart of the original plaza where the village of Coyoacán took root. Spanish authorities laid out this square in the sixteenth century on land once held by Hernán Cortés, using it to organize the surrounding colonial streets. While the city grew around it, the garden kept its quiet character, and in nineteen twenty-one, the neighborhood installed the fountain to commemorate a century of Mexican independence from Spanish rule.
