Cementerio judío de Fez

The Jewish Cemetery in Fez spreads across a hillside with thousands of white, rounded headstones that face toward Jerusalem. It serves as the final resting place for a community that lived in the adjacent Mellah for centuries. Among the rows lies the tomb of Lalla Solica, a young woman from the early nineteenth century. She refused to renounce her faith despite pressure from the local sultan, and generations of pilgrims still visit her grave today to leave notes and light candles in her honor.
