Aben Danan Synagogue

The Aben Danan Synagogue sits behind a plain, unassuming door in the heart of the old Jewish quarter. Inside, the floor is covered in distinctive green and white ceramic tiles, while the walls rise with intricate plaster carvings and colorful wooden beams. Built in the seventeenth century by the wealthy Aben Danan family, it served as a private place of worship for a merchant community. During a period of famine, the local rabbi reportedly sold the synagogue’s silver lamps to feed the hungry.
