Royal palace of Fes

The seven massive gates of the Royal Palace are decorated with intricate mosaics of blue and green zellige tile and polished brass knockers. This is the Dar al-Makhzen, the primary residence of the King of Morocco when he visits the city. Construction began in the thirteenth century, and sultans added layers to the site for hundreds of years. In nineteen sixty-nine, the original wooden gates were replaced with these ornate brass versions, which remain closed to the public behind the high walls.
