Te Arawa Soldiers Memorial

The Te Arawa Soldiers Memorial stands as a stone obelisk surrounded by iron railings in the middle of a formal garden. It commemorates the men of the Te Arawa tribe who died fighting for the British Empire during the First World War. When the sculptor William Trethewey finished the work in nineteen twenty-seven, he placed a bronze statue of a woman atop the plinth, representing the spirit of the tribe mourning its lost sons while holding a traditional carved taiaha.
