The Te Runanga Tea House features a distinctive octagonal roof topped with a sharp, pointed spire and intricate wood carvings lining its exterior. Built in nineteen oh eight, the structure served as a luxurious waiting room for visitors taking the waters at the nearby government bathhouse. When the Prime Minister at the time, Joseph Ward, officially opened the building, he hosted a formal tea service for hundreds of guests inside. It survived the subsequent decline of the local spa industry largely intact.
