Elephant Trunk Hill

Elephant Trunk Hill takes its name from a jagged limestone formation that curves down into the Li River, looking for all the world like a giant pachyderm dipping its trunk to drink. During the Ming dynasty, a local official named Yuan Jiong built a pavilion on top of the hill. He visited the site often to drink wine and compose poetry while watching the river flow through the round, natural archway beneath the elephant’s head, known as Water Moon Cave.
