Guilin Central Square

Guilin Central Square sits centered around a massive, circular fountain decorated with stone carvings of karst mountains and river landscapes. It replaced a chaotic tangle of low-rise houses and narrow alleys that defined this sector of the city for decades. In the late nineties, planners razed the neighborhood to create this expansive open space, intended to host public gatherings and city celebrations. Today, the square serves as the primary municipal gathering point where residents gather to practice tai chi or fly kites.
