The crimson walls of the Jingjiang Princes' Palace enclose the base of Solitary Beauty Peak, a limestone spire rising directly from the palace courtyard. Built in thirteen seventy-two, this compound served as the residence for the nephew of the first Ming Dynasty emperor. When Zhu Shouqian arrived, he ordered the construction of this walled city to project imperial authority in the southern frontier. Generations of princes lived here until the palace fell to fires during the chaos of the Ming transition to the Qing.
