The Market Hall in Wroclaw is recognizable by the massive, exposed concrete arches that hold up its roof. When engineers finished it in nineteen oh eight, it was one of the first buildings in the world to use reinforced concrete for such a wide, open interior span. Merchants moved in to clear the city streets of chaotic, open-air stalls. A stray German bomb damaged the structure in nineteen forty-five, but the local tradespeople repaired the damage themselves, and the market reopened shortly after.
