137 Pillars House Chiang Mai

The teak structure of 137 Pillars House stands on exactly what its name suggests: a massive grid of one hundred thirty-seven wooden stilts. Built in the late nineteenth century, this was the local headquarters for the British Borneo Company. Louis Leonowens, the son of Anna Leonowens from The King and I, managed the company’s logging interests from these rooms. The house held the power to coordinate the timber trade across northern Thailand while sitting high above the floodwaters of the Ping River.
