Bermondsey Settlement

The Bermondsey Settlement was a residential hub for social reform that opened in eighteen ninety-two. Reverend John Scott Lidgett founded it as the only Methodist contribution to the Victorian settlement movement. Unlike traditional religious missions focused solely on preaching, this center brought middle-class volunteers to live directly among the working-class families of Bermondsey. These residents aimed to bridge the deep class divide of the time by offering friendship, education, and community support in a neighborhood defined by industrial labor.
