St Saviours Dock originated in the thirteenth century when monks from the nearby Bermondsey Abbey embanked a tidal inlet where the River Neckinger met the Thames. They transformed this muddy creek into a functional harbor to provide a convenient landing point for bishops and merchants, allowing them to bypass the heavy congestion of London Bridge. The dock takes its name from the patron saint of the abbey, and it served as a vital maritime gateway for the religious community for centuries.
