Holy Trinity Church, Newington

Holy Trinity Church in Trinity Church Square stands as a centerpiece of a development that transformed what was once a muddy, industrial wasteland. Before the elegant square and church were built in the eighteen twenties, the land was a tenter ground where cloth merchants stretched fabric on rows of wooden tenterhooks to dry and shape. The church was constructed using a parliamentary grant and designed by Francis Octavius Bedford, who gave it a grand classical appearance with a Corinthian portico that mirrors the orderly, planned nature of the square surrounding it.
