Horsemonger Lane Gaol

You are approaching the site of the former Horsemonger Lane Gaol, which today is known as Newington Gardens. This prison was once the largest in Surrey and served as a major center for both incarceration and public execution until its closure in the late nineteenth century. Its design was a stark quadrangle that separated debtors from criminal inmates, reflecting the strict social and legal divisions of the era. The prison is perhaps most notorious for its rooftop gallows, which were built onto the gatehouse. This platform acted as a high-visibility stage for public hangings, meant to serve as a gruesome deterrent to the crowds that gathered below. In total, over one hundred and forty men and women met their end on this rooftop. The spectacle was so intense that it often drew tens of thousands of people, turning the area into a chaotic scene of pickpocketing and disorder.
